For those of you who don't know... I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints... aka the Mormons.
Our church structure/organization is set up to model the Church that Christ established while on the earth. He chose 12 apostles to act as a representative body, to hold the keys of the priesthood, and gave them other responsibilities, like missionary work...
Anyway, my point is that we also have 12 apostles in these days who are set apart as "Special Witnesses of Christ". In the last two weeks of July, two of them died.
David B. Haight (the B. stands for Bruce) died at the age of 97. What a wonderful man he was. He spoke at General Conference over the last few sessions and "wowed" us all with his wit, his charm, and his STRONG testimony of the Lord Jesus Christ! Additionally (and to my surprise) he was very well accomplished in the area of the world that I am currently living. I was totally blown away by this, but in his lifetime he was: The MAYOR of Palo Alto, the President of the Palo Alto Chamber of Commerce and Downtown Merchants Association, a director of the Stanford Area Boy Scout Council and a member of the board of directors of the Red Cross and annual fund chairman. He was also a member of the Rotary Club, director of the Stanford-Palo Alto Hospital and the Channing House Retirement Center and a member of the San Francisco Bay Area Council of Mayors. What an awesome man!! More of his accomplishments can be found by clicking here
Neal A. Maxwell (the A. stands for Ash) was one of my most favorite men in the world. I have this inherent thing where I tend to judge people by their ability to speak in an intelligent manner... Elder Maxwell was one of my heroes, in this regard!! He battled cancer (lukemia) for eight years, but was relentless in his pursuit of proclaiming the atonement of Jesus Christ for all mankind. President Gordon B. Hinckley described him as a perfectionist and a genius, and remarked that his talks were masterpieces, and his books worthy of multiple readings.
We will miss you great men! Thank you for setting an example to all of us!!
